How to Choose the Right Ceiling Dehumidifier for Your Space

In Singapore, relative humidity sits above 80% for much of the year. Left unchecked, that moisture warps timber, blooms mould behind wardrobes, and quietly damages electronics and stored goods. A ceiling-mounted dehumidifier solves this at the source — hidden above a false ceiling, ducted to several rooms, and running quietly in the background.

The single most important decision is capacity: how many litres of moisture the unit pulls from the air per day, matched to the size of the space it serves. Undersize it and it runs constantly without ever hitting your target humidity; oversize it and you pay more upfront than you need to.

Match capacity to floor area

DBA's Ultra-Thin (UTC) range spans four capacities. As a starting point for typical Singapore residential ceiling heights:

The UTC68 is the most popular choice for a whole HDB flat or condo — enough capacity for an apartment-wide ducted system without the size and weight of the UTC120. Studios and single rooms are well served by the compact UTC20.

The specs that actually matter

  • Moisture removal (L/day) — always quoted at a stated temperature and humidity (e.g. 30°C / 80% RH). Compare figures at the same conditions, not headline numbers.
  • Static pressure (Pa) — how hard the fan can push air through ductwork. Longer duct runs and more bends need higher static pressure. Each 90° elbow costs roughly 10 Pa.
  • Coverage area — the realistic floor area one unit can keep dry, assuming sensible duct layout.
  • Pump lift — every UTC has a built-in pump lifting condensate up to 1.8 m, so you're not limited to gravity drainage.
  • Refrigerant type — R410A and R134a are non-flammable; R32 is mildly flammable (A2L) and must be installed by qualified personnel in a ventilated space.
Rule of thumb: for a typical 4-room HDB flat (~1000 sqft), a single UTC68 ducted to the living and sleeping areas keeps the whole home comfortably below 60% RH. For larger landed homes, step up to the UTC120 or run two units.

How a Ceiling Dehumidifier Is Installed: The 8 Stages

A ceiling dehumidifier is suspended above a false ceiling, ducted to one or more rooms, and drained via a built-in pump. The work is methodical rather than difficult — but skipping the preparation steps is where most callbacks come from. Here's the full sequence a professional installer follows.

1 · Bench test before anything goes up

Before hanging the unit, run a 10-minute power-on test on the floor. Connect the LCD control panel (terminals 4–7) and the temperature & humidity sensor (terminals 1–3), power up, set the humidity target to 40% RH or lower to force the compressor on, and let it run. Warm air at the outlet and a falling RH reading confirm the unit works. A fault code now saves you dismantling a hung unit later.

2 · Preparation & planning

  • Plenum height — UTC20 needs 200 mm, UTC68 needs 240 mm, UTC120 needs 310 mm, plus 20–30 mm clearance above and below so the body never touches the slab or ceiling.
  • Access hatch — a 450 × 450 mm or 600 × 600 mm hatch directly in front of the service-panel side, so the unit can be serviced later.
  • Duct routes — sketch supply and return paths early and count every elbow.

3 · Hanging the unit

The unit hangs from four M10 304 stainless threaded rods anchored into the concrete slab. Rubber vibration washers go above and below each mounting foot to keep fan vibration off the structure, and a spirit level confirms the body is true before final tightening. Leave at least 2 cm of clearance above and below for levelling.

4 · Drainage

Every UTC has a built-in auto-drain pump with a 1.8 m head and an integral check valve, so no external check valve is needed. Fit an upper U-trap to block drain-line odours, insulate the drain pipe against condensation, and always use a short flexible hose at the unit outlet to isolate vibration — never rigid pipe directly onto the spigot.

5 · Ducting

  • Aluminium foil flex duct for most runs; rigid galvanised for longer sections.
  • Keep total main duct (supply + return) within about 10 m to limit friction losses.
  • Always connect a 300–500 mm flexible section at the unit flange to stop vibration travelling into the rooms.
  • Up to 5 supply and 5 return outlets are supported.

6 · Controls & wiring

All signal wiring is done with the power off. The 86 × 86 mm LCD panel mounts on a wall for daily use; the humidity sensor sits at the return-air vent or a quiet ceiling corner — never in the supply airstream. Terminals 8–13 are passive dry-contact inputs for remote on/off, leak detection and BMS interlock — never feed external voltage into them.

7 · Power

The unit needs its own dedicated, properly earthed circuit: 3 × 2.5 mm² cable, a dedicated 16 A type-C breaker, and a service-accessible isolator. Don't share the circuit — compressor startup current can nuisance-trip a shared breaker.

8 · Acceptance test

Energise, set dehumidify mode with a target below ambient, and confirm the compressor starts within about 90 seconds. Check for warm supply air, listen for abnormal noise at both grilles, and re-test the drain by pouring a litre of water into the pan. Ten minutes of watching the unit run is what separates a clean install from a callback.

Never skip this: don't power the unit on during construction. Drywall dust, cement and sawdust settle on the coil and kill the compressor. Tape the inlet shut until the room is clean.
Maintenance & Care

Keeping Your Dehumidifier Running Like New

A ceiling dehumidifier rewards a small amount of routine care with years of efficient, reliable service. There are really only three jobs across the year, and none takes more than ten minutes.

Every 2 weeks — clean the filter

Slide the mesh filter out from the service-panel side. Tap or vacuum off the dust, or wash in warm water (under 40°C) with a little neutral detergent, then air-dry completely before refitting. In dusty environments, check weekly. Never refit a damp filter — biofilm starts on day one and airflow drops. A clogged filter is the single most common cause of weak output.

Yearly — coil & drain service

Power off at the breaker first. Wipe the casing with a soft dry cloth, run a litre of water through the drain pan to confirm the pump clears quickly, and check the coil through the hatch. Never rinse the unit with running water — it risks insulation failure and shock.

Coastal or above a kitchen? Halve every interval. Salt aerosol and cooking-oil mist coat the coil roughly twice as fast.

Common symptoms, plain answers

  • Output dropping? Nine times out of ten it's a dirty filter. Rinse it, then give it 24 hours.
  • Musty smell? Rinse the filter first, then run the UV-C lamp for a few cycles.
  • Compressor won't start? Check the target humidity is below the room reading, that you're in dehumidify mode, and remember there's a 3-minute restart delay by design.
  • Noise through the ceiling? Check the body isn't touching the slab — slacken the rod nuts a turn and let the rubber washers do the isolating.

WiFi App & RS485 Modbus: Controlling Humidity Remotely

Beyond the wall-mounted LCD panel, every DBA UTC unit offers two ways to monitor and control humidity remotely — a phone app for homes, and an industrial bus for buildings.

WiFi via the Tuya Smart app

The app lets you set target humidity, switch modes and check status from anywhere. Pairing is straightforward, with one catch: the phone must be on a 2.4 GHz WiFi network — 5 GHz won't pair.

  • Install the Tuya Smart app and create an account.
  • Connect your phone to 2.4 GHz WiFi and enable Bluetooth.
  • Hold the fan-speed button on the panel until the WiFi icon flashes.
  • Tap "Add Device" in the app — it discovers the unit automatically.

RS485 Modbus for building automation

For commercial sites, the A/B RS485 ports behind the LCD panel speak standard Modbus RTU at 9600 bps, ready to integrate with a BMS, HMI or PLC. Passive dry-contact inputs also allow fire-alarm interlock, remote on/off and leak-sensor shutdown — making the unit a well-behaved member of a larger building-automation system.

Why it matters: remote humidity control means you can keep storage rooms, server spaces or cellars within spec without anyone walking the floor — and get an alert the moment a drain backs up or a leak is detected.
